Market hall in PuntagordaIf you haven't been to the sardine funeral at least once in your life, you have no idea what carnival can be like. The festivities, which will not be over on Ash Wednesday, roar under Caribbean and South American music through the streets, which are coloured white by the talcum powder. Don't wonder about anything, it's just as well, it's closing and the mood is constantly boiling. To protect yourself against the dust, wear glasses and dive into the crowd.
The Bajada is the most famous island festival and takes place only every 5 years from June to August. The festival dates back to an event of 1676, when, after a long drought, the statue of the Virgin Mary, the patron saint of the island, was carried in a procession from her place in the chapel down to the capital Santa Cruz to ask for her help. Today, on the last Sunday in June, the statue with its throne is still carried down from the chapel of Las Nieves to the church of El Salvador, a district of Santa Cruz. Several weeks of festive activities begin with processions, nightly lantern runs, music and dancing events.
The highlight of the festival is the dwarf dance "Danza de los Enanos", where children in medieval costumes dance in the light of torches and lanterns.
Every year at the end of January or on the first weekend in February, depending on the status of the almond blossom, the famous almond flower festival takes place in Puntagorda. Visitors from all parts of the island and the neighbouring islands then celebrate a weekend of local music and a glittering party until the early morning hours.
